George Strait is certainly the King of Country. But he’s more than that. He’s also a really great guy. Strait is known for his generous donations to military families, kids, and first responders. He even used his Tequila Brand, Condigo, to raise money for bartenders who couldn’t work during the pandemic last year. And in 2017, he proved his good-guy status again after a hurricane devastated his home state of Texas.
Following Hurricane Harvey, George Strait announced his plans to host a benefit concert in San Antonio, Texas. The proceeds would help Texans affected by the hurricane. Strait also enlisted some of his famous country music friends to help him, including Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton.
Obviously, fans knew just how incredible the show would be because tickets sold out the same day they went on sale. Luckily, fans who didn’t get the chance to snag a ticket were able to watch parts of the concert during the Hand in Hand telethon that aired later. However, one of the best performances from the concert never aired during the telethon. Only lucky fans who attended the show got to witness the collab. And that was the duo between George Strait and Chris Stapleton.
George Strait Teams Up With Chris Stapleton For Some Country Music Magic
Stapleton and Strait had worked together previously. The two co-wrote Strait’s 2011 hit song, “Love’s Gonna Make it Alright.” So teaming up for a performance during the benefit concert felt natural. The two sang one of Strait’s most popular songs, “All My Ex’s Live in Texas.”
The two went back and forth during the song. George Strait even let Stapleton sing lead for parts of the song. But the best parts of the performance were when the two sang together. Strait’s classic country sound combined with Stapleton’s soulful voice made for a really unique and magical country collaboration. We just hope there’s a song collaboration between the two of them sometime in the future. We’d love an official George Strait, Chris Stapleton tune!
What’s The Story Behind The Song?
Even decades after the song was released, George Strait’s “All My Ex’s Live In Texas” is still a fan favorite. The song was the second single from Strait’s Ocean Front Property album. It was Strait’s first album to debut at number one. And the song quickly soared to the tops of the charts making it Strait’s 11th number-one hit song. The song even landed Strait a nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performace at the 1988 Grammy Awards.
So, is the song based on real-life exes? “All My Exes Live In Texas” was co-written by songwriters Sanger D. and Linda J. Shafer. During an interview, Sanger D. Shafer once admitted that the song really was based on past lovers.
“This song is a true story, kind of,” Shafer said “I changed the names to protect the guilty. I changed the names of the towns, too.”
