Throughout her legendary country music career, Loretta Lynn has always been focused on her family. In recent years, she has invited family members to perform on stage with her during her concerts.
One of Lynn’s family members took the stage with her a few years ago and made her extra proud. The apple it appears doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
According to an article from CountryMusicNation.com, Loretta Lynn was performing in Salina, Kansas, on July 9, 2016. The concert took place at the Stiefel Theatre of Performing Arts. During the performance, she invited her grandson to join her on stage and perform.
Grandson Chooses to Perform Rock Song
Guitar in hand, he stepped into the limelight and began to sing a solo. Instead of a classic country song by Johnny Cash, George Jones, Hank Williams, or Willie Nelson, he reportedly opted for something from another genre. His song choice, “The Joker,” by the Steve Miller Band.
Accompanied by Lynn’s band, the young man turns in a performance that was worthy of being on stage with a country legend. He’s inherited his grandmother’s stage presence. He is energetic and charismatic as he sings the familiar lyrics: “Cause I’m a picker / I’m a grinner / I’m a lover / And I’m a sinner / I play the music in the sun / I’m a joker / I’m a smoker / I’m a midnight toker / I sure don’t want to hurt no one.”
Loretta Lynn is obviously proud of her grandson, tapping her feet and smiling as she sits next to him on stage. Actually, she isn’t just smiling – she is beaming. The crowd also enjoys his cover of “The Joker.” They are heard clapping and yelling in the background as he sings.
Steve Miller Band released “The Joker” in 1970 on an album also named “The Joker.” The song made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Most memorably, its use in a Levi’s commercial during 1990 brought it back to prominence across the globe.
It will be interesting to see if the young man decides to pursue music as a career. Watch the performance, including Loretta Lynn’s reaction below.
