Country Throwback: Tim McGraw Honors Glen Campbell Singing ‘I’m Not Gonna Miss You’ at 2015 Oscars

At the 2015 Academy Awards, Tim McGraw paid a heartfelt tribute to the one and only, Glen Campbell.

Country music fans will forever remember Glen Campbell as a true gem in the country music world. With iconic hits such as “Wichita Lineman” and “Rhinestone Cowboy,” Campbell rightfully earned the status as a country music legend.

In 2011, after spending his life sharing his songs worldwide, Glen Campbell received a heartbreaking diagnosis: Alzheimer’s. Despite the unfortunate news, Campbell wasn’t going to let that slow him down at all. 

As a way to say goodbye to his fans and his voice, Campbell embarked on one final tour, which became the subject of the documentary Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me. The documentary gives fans a detailed glimpse of how Campbell handled his Alzheimer’s while on the road.

In addition to the tour, Campbell also recorded and wrote one final song for the film, called “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” Campbell and Julian Raymond penned the tune while Campbell was still in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The highly emotional song served as his love letter to his wife and children.

“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” won the Grammy Award for “Best Country Song” in 2015. Additionally, since the song appeared in a film, it was also nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song,” but lost to “Glory” from Selma.

At the time, Glen Campbell’s Alzheimer’s kept him unable to attend the Academy Awards in 2015. His wife Kim and daughter Ashley came in his place in his to represent him at the ceremony.

Tim McGraw Pays Respect To Late Legend

As a way to pay homage to the country legend that came before him, Tim McGraw honored Campbell when he performed“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” in a powerful tribute.

McGraw took center stage while dozens of brightly-lit bulbs surrounded him. The bright lights made it so he was the only person you could see out on stage, making the performance more intimate and meaningful.

McGraw started off singing a cappella, giving you the chance to hear the raw emotion in his rendition. The weight of the moment was clearly heard as he poured his heart into every the lyric.

McGraw’s commitment to his tribute resulted in a beautiful performance that touched everyone who watched. Campbell’s wife and daughter seemed highly moved, as they looked at one another with heartfelt smiles once he finished the tribute.
