Christmas music means a lot to so many people. Some of the classic, longstanding songs have been around so long they connect generations of people together. For the Johnny Cash family, it connects them with celebrating life and acknowledging a loss.
Honoring Maybelle Carter
In a “The Johnny Cash Show” 1978 CBS Christmas special, Johnny Cash hosted the event with performances from the Statler Brothers, The Tennessee Three, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette and Kris Kristofferson.
When the Cash family took the stage, they sang “Silent Night.” On stage was Carlene, Tara, Rosanne, Cindy, Kathy, and Rosey Nix all to the stage. Together, they sang the classic Christmas song as a tribute to June’s mother, Maybelle Carter.
Maybelle Carter passed away a few months before in October.
Cash was quite the family man. Before June Carter passed away in 2003, the two spent 35 years together. Johnny would then pass a few months later.
According to Classic Country Music, Maybelle Carter was part of “country’s first family.” This was known as The Carter Family. Then later in life, she was the lead singer of Mother Maybelle and The Carter Sisters. Her talent on the guitar created a new way of playing called “Carter Scratch.”
Johnny Cash and His Kids
Prior to being married to June Carter, Cash was married to Vivian Liberto.
The eldest Cash child is Rosanne. She would grow to be an award-winning musician just like her dad. It was not the path she thought she would take given her childhood, however.
“I didn’t think I could sing … And I grew up thinking becoming famous was about the worst thing you could do. You went on the road, you started doing drugs and got divorced and didn’t see your kids, and everything fell apart,” Rosanne said, according to Country Thang Daily.
During her entire career, she had three Grammy awards and 12 nominations. She is known for chart-topping singles like “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” and “Seven Year Ache.” She is also in the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.
His second daughter is Kathleen, or Kathy.
She created a buzz after walking out of the movie “Walk the Line” five times because of how poorly her mother, Vivian Liberto, was portrayed.
“My mom was basically a nonentity in the entire film except for the mad little psycho who hated his career. That’s not true. She loved his career and was proud of him until he started taking drugs and stopped coming home,” she said.
His next kid was Cindy, who also loves music. In the late 80s, she was a part of the group “The Next Generation,” which was made up of other country star’s daughters.
Tara Cash is the youngest daughter, who released the book “Recollections by J.R. Cash: Childhood Memories of Johnny Cash.”
Johnny Cash and June Carter had one child, John Carter Cash. He is a singer-songwriter and record producer. He worked with Loretta Lynn, Brooks & Dunn, George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, and John Prine.
