Celebrate the 3-year anniversary of Dan + Shay‘s monster hit, “Tequila”, with Dan Smyers with a video he’s recorded just for fans.

It’s hard to believe that 3 years have gone by since the release of “Tequila.” The a-typical love song took the country charts by storm upon release, and Dan + Shay are still celebrating several years on as the hit shows no signs of slowing down.

“We dropped TEQUILA 3 years ago today, and y’all just took it to 6X platinum in the US,” the duo posts to their Twitter account today. Included within is a low-vibe recording from Dan of Dan + Shay: Dan Smyers himself.

“Celebrate with us by singing along to this video!” Smyers asks of fans as he plays out the now-iconic “Tequila” piano chords.

“Thanks so much to everyone for listening to this song. y’all have changed our lives in more ways than you know,” the duo adds in celebration of their milestone.

‘Tequila’ Skyrocketed Dan + Shay to Top of Country Music

Any song going “6x platinum” is an enormous deal. That’s 6 million sales of a single song – “Tequila” for Dan + Shay, in this instance. It’s been a hit for country music fans since it’s release in 2018, too.

The unique love song was recorded by the duo for their third, self-titled studio album. Dan Smyers himself co-wrote the song, and co-produced it with Scott Hendricks (another big name in the industry). As the album’s lead single, “Tequila” released three years ago today on January 10, 2018. Just days later, the song would start topping every single country chart – rocketing all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts.

From there, “Tequila” would go on to win Dan + Shay a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance the following year. The duo would then take home both Single and Song of the Year at the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards.

The song’s appeal would soon prove to stretch far beyond country music, as well. “Tequila” also charted at No. 21 on the Hot 100 – for all songs nationwide of any genre – in 2018, as well. This was, at the time, Dan + Shay’s highest charting single on Hot 100 until “10,000 Hours” in 2019.
