Dan + Shay commemorated the eighth anniversary of the day they met.

What Dan + Shay Had to Say

On Monday (December 7), Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney shared a heartwarming Instagram post.

“Well, the original intention of this selfie was to let y’all know that we’ll be performing a few songs on the @todayshow tomorrow morning,” the duo wrote. “(SURPRISE, we are.) But when I opened my phone to take the photo, realized the date is 12/7. Which means it has been exactly 8 years since we met. 😭😭”

“Just wanna say thanks for everything y’all have done for us, it truly means the world,” they added. “We’ve been able to accomplish some really cool things since we started this band, and it’s all because of you believing in the music. Kinda all up in our emotions today. So if you’ve made it this far in the caption and feel so inclined, please comment your favorite d+s memory from the last 8 years. We’re gonna read ‘em all and try not to cry. Sending lots of love to all of you, and hope you watch us on the @todayshow tomorrow morning!”

Fans quickly swarmed the comment section and relived their favorite concert and meet and greet stories with Smyers and Mooney. They will be performing on NBC’s The Today Show on Tuesday, December 8.

How They Met

The pair met in an unconventional place, a tent. The tent was almost like a fort and was inside Smyers’ living room.

“We met in December, actually, at his house, at a party,” Mooney told Taste of Country. “I get to this party, I’m walking in this old house,” he laughed. “It was a terrible house, of course, a typical Nashville starting-artist house.”

“I’m walking into the living room, and there is just a tent … it was borderline fort-ish,” he recalled. “I had no money to pay for heat,” Smyers added. “So I went to the thrift store and bought a bunch of sheets. [We] tented out the whole living room, and we retained all the heat in there. We all just hung out, huddled around … Shay and I were jamming that night, and we’ve been writing three songs a day every since.”
