Darius Rucker Says He Has Fans Who ‘Have No Idea’ He Was in Hootie & the Blowfish

He may be a star in the country world, but Darius Rucker doesn’t forget his roots. The singer and songwriter revealed in his interview with Apple Music’s Essential Radio interview that his fans actually don’t know he was a member of the hit band, Hootie & the Blowfish.

While chatting with the show’s host, Kelleigh Bannen, Darius states, “There’s a lot of people, but there’s such a young crowd that still amazes me, that just have no idea that I was in Hootie & the Blowfish. Again, and they’re still shocked when they see it.” He then recalls, “I think I saw this three days ago, where a guy said, ‘I was today old when I found out that Darius Rucker was the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish.’ I’m like, ‘Really?’”

Darius continues, “The funny thing you said, playing covers, I’ll never forget. I’m on Twitter, I finished a show and this guy comes on Twitter and goes, ‘Man, the show was great, but how come you played so many Hootie covers? I didn’t know you liked Hootie so much.’ That was funny.”

Darius then shares what made Hootie & the Blowfish stand out early on. “We played ‘Hold My hand’ The first time on [Late Show With David Letterman] and our lives changed overnight. And that’s no exaggeration. Overnight. Nobody was trying to add us. Some stations in the south were playing us because we were playing their towns in clubs, but nobody was trying to play our record. And we went on Letterman on Friday and on Monday everyone added it.”

Darius Rucker Reveals He Doesn’t Miss Being Apart of “The Biggest Band in the World”

Also during his interview with Kelleigh Bannen, Darius Rucker reveals that he actually doesn’t miss being a part of what he calls the “biggest band in the world”. He explains, “People always ask me if I miss when we were the biggest band in the world and I always say, ‘No.’ I miss when it was us against the world. When we were playing those clubs and it was just five of us showing up and doing what we do. I miss those days.”

Darius Rucker then reflects, “And we were actually making a pretty good living just doing what we were doing. And, so we weren’t even really fretting about a record deal and anything. But it was just us against the world. I mean, it sounds so cliche but that’s really [what it] was. All we knew was we had to be to the next town the next night.”

Hootie & the Blowfish was formed in 1986. Bandmates were Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber and Jim Sonefeld. In 2008, the group decided to go on hiatus, and Rucker ventured into country music shortly after. The guys eventually announced their plans for a reunion tour in 2019 and released their new album, Imperfect Circle, which was their first album in fourteen years.
