Following the news that Lee Elder, the first African American golfer to play in the Masters, passed away at the age of 87, country singer and songwriter Darius Rucker took to Twitter to pen a special tribute to the late professional golfer.

“We lost a legend,” Darius Rucker declared in his tweet. “My friend Lee Elder was an incredible man.  He is gonna be so missed.  All my love to his Wife and family. God Bless u Lee.”

As previously reported, PGA Tour announced the news of Elder’s passing on Monday (November 29th). “Lee Elder has passed away at the age of 87,” the organization’s tweet reads. “In 1975, he made history as the first African American to compete in the Masters Tournament.”

The PGA Tour organization also revealed that Elder was honored this past April at Augusta National. He shared with the Associated Press at the time, “1975 was just an ordinary shot playing a golf tournament. Even though was the Masters. It’s not as significant as this shot will become on April 8, 2021. Because my heart and soul will be into this shot.”

Darius Rucker Previously Stated That Lee Elder Is One Of His Favorite Golfers

During a July 2017 interview with Billboard, Darius Rucker spoke about his top five favorite golfers. He included Lee Elder in his favorites. “I’ve studied his career in every way I can,” Rucker declared. “I’ve become friends with him. He did things and broke barriers.”

Darius Rucker also stated that he believes one of the reasons he gets to play golf all over the world is because of the barriers that Elder broke down. “I just think he’s amazing.”

Darius Ruckers’ other favorite golfers are Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Davis Love, and Jim Furyk. When asked what really motivates him to spend time on a golf course, Rucker said, “First of all, I love being out in nature. That’s probably my favorite part. I’m always looking at the wildlife that is out at all the places I play.”

The singer and songwriter further explained that the thing that really gets him about the game is he never played two rounds that were anywhere close to being the same. “Even with the same course and set up, nothing is ever the same. I love that about golf.”

While also talking about his own golf game, Darius Rucker shared, “I’ve shot par a few times. And shot under par a few times. But if I break even, I’m really happy.”

In regards to his favorite golf courses, Darius Rucker revealed August National (Augusta, Georgia); Pebble Beach (Pebble Beach, California); Bulls Bay (Charleston, South Carolina); The Country Club of Charleston (Charleston, South Carolina); and The Ocean Course (Kiawah Island, South Carolina) are his top five.
