Country music star Dierks Bentley’s first concert experience isn’t what you would expect from a country artist. Speaking to The Boot, Bentley reveals the first concert he ever attended was a Bon Jovi and Skid Row show.

The now defunct Compton Terrace provided the venue for the singer’s first taste of live music when he was a teen. Bentley says he now looks back fondly on memories of how he got his start as a professional musician and singer in the country genre.

Bentley Talks Path to Musical Career

“At 13, a friend introduced me to an electric guitar. I didn’t even know you were allowed to play an electric guitar. Didn’t know they existed,” Bentley says. “But he had all the pedals that made all the sounds. And I started getting into all the music those guitars play.”

While Bentley says he enjoyed the Bon Jovi show, his teenage mind focused on the opposite sex for most of the concert.

“A lot of times, if we have a B stage where we can get close to the grass, I tell the guys up in the back, ‘I’m sure there are some guys up there not even watching,'” the singer says. “You’re probably here to meet girls, probably staring at a girl right now. And I can relate, because that’s how I spent my first concert. “I told that story to Bon Jovi, and he said, ‘That’s the sign of a good concert.'”

Bentley says he got into country music at 17-years old and has been country through and through ever since. He also states his father was an influence on him choosing the country path. He says he dedicated himself to the country music genre after a friend introduced him to Hank Williams Jr.

Bentley celebrated his 45th birthday just yesterday.
