Dolly Parton Celebrates ‘Amazing Friendships and Memories’ on Anniversary of ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’

Dolly Parton didn’t forget that Friday marked the 39th anniversary of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” being released to movie theaters.

Parton played Mona Stangley, the owner of a brothel called the “Chicken Ranch.” Miss Mona, in the movie adaptation of the 1978 stage play, had a relationship with Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. Dodd was played by Burt Reynolds, who starred in the movie alongside Parton.

In a message from her Twitter account on Friday, Dolly Parton, the country music legend, shared a few words as well as a picture of herself dolled up as Miss Mona.

Besides Dolly Parton and Reynolds, other co-stars in the movie included Dom DeLuise, Charles Durning, Jim Nabors, Lois Nettleton, and Robert Mandan.

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” earned a hefty $11 million at the box office during its first weekend. It was set near the city of Gilbert, Texas.

Parton also contributed to the musical score of the movie. She definitely had a hand in the creative side of the motion picture. Dolly Parton proved herself worthy of being in movies as she also played in “9 To 5” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 1980. Colin Higgins directed that movie as well as “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”

Dolly Parton Listed Modern Country Stars She Thought Will Stand Test of Time

Now Parton has been on the country music scene for decades. She’s sold millions of records, appeared in too many concerts to count, and got her start while working with Porter Wagoner.

But Dolly Parton knows that there are a number of current country music stars making their mark on the scene.

Alison Krauss will be around doing great things forever,” Parton said in a 2008 interview with “The Boot.” While the two share country music in common, Krauss’ true roots lie in bluegrass and folk.

Who else besides Krauss makes Parton’s list?

“I think Keith UrbanKenny Chesney, and, of course, Garth [Brooks] – he’s proved that he can be whatever he wants to be… He can work or not work and still be just as popular,” she said.

Parton added, “There are a lot of great artists, so it’s hard to say. You never know when you start out what’s going to happen and who’s gonna last. But there are a lot of new, young artists who have the goods.”

Still, these artists that Dolly Parton pointed out have already achieved a lot in their careers. They’ll have to do a lot of work, though, to catch up and best Parton’s success. Parton is an artist who has achieved crossover appeal in both country and popular music. That’s quite a feat and there is no slowing down the Country Music Hall of Fame member, either.
