Dolly Parton Explains to Jimmy Fallon How ‘9 to 5’ Became ‘5 to 9’

by Madison Miller

Whether or not you’re a fan of country music, odds are you know the famous Dolly Parton tune “9 to 5.”

It is one of the country artist’s most popular tunes that continues to make an appearance even now, nearly 40 years later. It is a song all about motivation, hard work, and working for a part of the corporate machine.

“Tumble outta bed / And I stumble to the kitchen / Pour myself a cup of ambition / And yawn and stretch and try to come to life.”

The rhythm, she admitted to Jimmy Fallon, comes from the sound that her acrylic nails make when she rubs them together. Her nails are listed as part of the instrumental credits.

With a highly recognizable tune, how did Parton recently change up the lyrics to her classic song?

Working ‘5 to 9’

Recently, Dolly Parton has been a part of an advertising campaign with Squarespace. The ad will debut during Super Bowl LV.

Squarespace is a site that allows people to make a website. While on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” Parton talked about how it’s great for people who have a “side hustle.” Parton considers herself in this category since she has added onto her extensive resume a new career in making perfume.

She now has her own perfume line called “Scent From Above.” She has her website through Squarespace.

Connecting with New Generations

For Dolly Parton, rewriting the song was a way to honor a whole new generation of workers. Now, more and more entrepreneurs and other hardworking individuals “tumble outta bed” at 5 a.m. or earlier. It can also represent those who work after hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The song is an ode to this new breed of workers but is also a way to further introduce new people to Parton’s music. She didn’t even hesitate to change her classic lyrics into something entirely new.

“This was really a wonderful way to kinda connect with new generation, let some new people be in the ad and I’m not actually all over it, but I’m in it,” Parton said.

On “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” Parton shared part of the clip and the new lyrics. It features an array of younger people dashing around a colorful and strange office setting.

“Workin’ 5 to 9 / You’ve got passion and a vision / ‘Cause it’s hustlin’ time / Only way to make a livin’ / Gonna change your life do something that gives it meaning.”

According to AP News, Dolly Parton also recently donated $1 million for coronavirus research.

You can see the rest of the commercial when it appears during Super Bowl LV. The game will start at 5:30 p.m. CT and will be the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers going against one another.
