Well, fellow Outsiders, it looks like we’ve been had. We were duped, bamboozled, and downright fooled by a fake TikTok account. Monday, I told you all about Dolly Parton’s super sweet TikTok debut. In the video, the country music icon sang a little inspirational song and told everyone things were going to be okay. However, it turns out that the video was fake.
The internet’s love for Dolly Parton is real, though. The account gained over 500k followers in the short time that it was up. Furthermore, the short inspirational video featuring everyone’s favorite Tennessean made huge waves online and garnered millions of views. However, The Independent reported that someone took the video from Dolly’s Imagination Library and doctored it. Take a look at the video below. Adding the new context makes some things stand out.
For instance, Dolly Parton’s tone is usually sweet. However, in this video, she sounds like she’s speaking to a room full of kids. Furthermore, she says she’ll be online to read a story later. We all know that TikTok users are mostly young people. But, they aren’t that young. That struck me as odd, initially, but I’m not one to question Dolly. I’d assume that most people who saw the video felt the same way.
Additionally, her lips don’t match the words for the first few seconds of the video. That is something that I didn’t pay much attention to while writing about the video yesterday. However, glitches happen when recording videos for social media. So, many fans may have assumed that Dolly Parton had an issue with her equipment while making the video.
Dolly Parton’s Fans Flocked to the Fake TikTok
The fake Dolly Parton TikTok was only up for a little more than a day. In that short span of time, it gained hundreds of thousands of followers. Furthermore, people were excited to see the icon on the platform. For instance, Today reported that several fans took to the video’s comments to herald the arrival of The Queen. However, Parton’s fans weren’t the only ones on that bandwagon. CMT’s official account chimed in, saying, “The Queen has arrived,” they weren’t the only big name in the comments, though. Spotify’s official TikTok joined the comments section. They said Dolly’s arrival on the platform was “the moment we’ve all been waiting for.”
The fake account got a huge following. So, that leaves us to wonder if Dolly Parton will actually join the platform. Several other established country artists like Clay Walker and Randy Travis are already on the platform. Additionally, it is a great place for up-and-comers like Willi Carlisle. So, who knows? Maybe Dolly will see the response and decide to make a real account. Here’s hoping.
