Dolly Parton Mourns Loss of ‘One of My Favorite People,’ Olympia Dukakis

Recently, Dolly Parton published a thread of tweets mourning the loss of former co-star Olympia Dukakis. Olympia Dukakis passed away at 89 years old. Parton worked with Dukakis on the set of Steel Magnolias.

“I was so sorry to hear that Olympia Dukakis had passed away. She has been one of my favorite people that I have ever known or worked with. I really got very close to her and felt like we were good friends,” Dolly Parton tweeted.

“Even though I didn’t get to see her much, I thought of her often and knew that she was such a quality human being. She will be missed by her fans, her family, and those of us that were lucky enough to get to know her personally. – Dolly,” she finished. She initially put out the statement elsewhere before releasing it to her personal Twitter account today.

Olympia Dukakis was also known for her work on Steel Magnolias and Moonstruck. Dolly Parton worked with her on Steel Magnolias.

Dolly Parton Amongst the Many Mourning Olympia Dukakis

Olympia Dukakis left a deep impression on many, and her loss is immense. Sally Field, who co-starred alongside Dolly Parton and Olympia Dukakis tweeted,

“What can I say but I loved her? Everyone loved her. She was a gift..unique and talented and one of a kind. Rest in peace my friend Olympia.”

Meanwhile, Cher, who co-starred with Dukakis in Moonstruck, shared heartfelt words of grief and beautiful pictures of Dukakis.

“Olympia Dukakis Was an Amazing, Academy Award-Winning Actress. Olympia Played My Mom In Moonstruck,& Even Though Her Part was That Of a Suffering Wife, We [laughed] ALL The Time. She Would Tell Me How MUCH She Loved Louis, her “Handsome Talented Husband.” I Talked To Her 3Wks Ago. Rip Dear One.”

The photos Cher tweeted are of Dukakis and her husband, Louis. She and Louis were married from 1962 until his death in 2018.

Dolly Parton is one of the many who remembered Dukakis for her kindness and her talent. From the daughter of Greek immigrants to a renowned high school athlete to an academy award-winning actress, Dukakis lived a vibrant and dynamic life. Dolly Parton and fellow co-stars show just a tiny sliver of how immense the loss is.

Her brother, Appollo, broke the news on Sunday, citing “many months of failing health” as her cause of death. In the heartbreaking announcement post, he also said that Dukakis is “finally at peace and with her Louis.”
