Legendary country music singer and songwriter Dolly Parton isn’t one to boast about her storied career. Parton has a list of accomplishments that would make the jaw of most anyone in the music industry drop.
Her catalog of songs is well known to country music fans across the world and highly respected among music industry professionals. With such hits as “Jolene,” “Cologne,” 9 to 5″ and “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” Parton’s resume is second to none.
Dolly Parton Talks About Hit Song
One of her biggest hits, however, is “I Will Always Love You,” which was released in 1974 as part of her “Jolene” album. In typical Dolly Parton fashion, she downplayed the magnitude of the song. In a recent interview with the New York Times, she says the song, with its five-word refrain, is simplistic and that anyone could write a similar song.
“Any dummy could have written that,” she jokes in the article.
Though Parton recorded the song in 1973, the song’s popularity would return in 1992, with Whitney Houston’s version. Houston recorded her version for a movie called The Bodyguard.
The New York Times article goes on to describe how Parton has maintained relevance through her 50-plus year career.
“Dolly Parton has remained a bright star in the cosmos of culture for 53 years,” a tweet from the New York Times says. “Not by reinventing herself but by strategically reintroducing herself to fans both old and new.”
