Miley Cyrus took part in Dolly Parton’s new holiday album, “A Holly Dolly Christmas.” But she almost missed the boat because of the antiquated way in which Parton chose to ask her to participate.

In an appearance on the “Graham Norton Show,” Cyrus told the story of how Parton, her godmother, reached out to include her.

“She faxed me,” Cyrus explained. Of course, Cyrus, a millennial, does not own a fax machine.

“She gets upset when you don’t respond,” Cyrus said. “And it’s like, I’m sorry, I don’t— I don’t even know. Half the people watching your show might not even know what a fax machine is.”

But her dad, country musician Billy Ray Cyrus, does have a fax machine in his gym. So Parton was able to get through to Miley Cyrus that way.

“My dad has two Blackberries, from like, 2005,” Cyrus went on. “And he says two Blackberries equal an iPhone. Which is not true. But he’s also one of those.”

Cyrus had to record the song way in advance. So she found herself singing a Christmas tune in the middle of the summer.

“Yeah, Dolly reached out about doing a Christmas record for her, and only for Dolly Parton do you sing a Christmas carol in July,” she said. “But she makes physical records, and so she had to get it turned in, and so I was singing about Christmas in the middle of LA summer. And only for Dolly.”

The record marks Parton’s 47thsolo studio album. It is her third Christmas-themed album. And it features duets with Miley Cyrus, Michael Buble, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Ray Cyrus, Willie Nelson and Parton’s brother Randy Parton.
