Dolly Parton Was the ‘Most Popular Girl in School’ and She Knows Why

by Jonathan Howard

Ever since she was young, Dolly Parton has wanted to be a star. That includes when she was the “most popular girl in school” back in the day.

When Dolly was growing up in Sevier County, TN, she was a star in the making. At her small school, she was the most popular girl in the whole place. And, the country music singer has no illusions as to why she was. However, it isn’t completely what you think.

Back in 1978, during a Playboy Magazine interview, she talked about school and growing up.

“I was the most popular girl in school but in the wrong way,” Parton said. “I wore tight clothes and told dirty jokes.” Now that sounds a bit like the Dolly we all know and love.

“I looked more mature, I was more mature. I used my mind in different ways. [And] developed my mind by writing and thinking deep and planning and dreaming,” Parton explained. There was more to it than that, too. “I looked as old as the teachers. When I was in high school, I looked like I was 25 years old.”

While she wasn’t always the happiest in school, Dolly Parton was determined to finish high school for a few reasons.

Why Dolly Had to Finish School

There was pressure to graduate high school when Dolly was growing up, but not like there is today. When Parton was in school, it would have been fine if she didn’t finish, for the most part. When she talked about why she finished school, she didn’t mention her parents or peers. Instead, it was an inner drive.

“I wanted to finish high school just so I could say I did,” she said. “Because I knew I’d learn things there that I would probably need to know, because I had already decided I was going out into the world.”

If Dolly Parton decides she is going to do something, she is going to do it. That is clearly something she has possessed since she was a teen in school. Of course, Parton did eventually go out into the world. She made her way to Nashville.

Dolly Parton is Addicted to ‘Feeling of Giving’

With the holiday season upon us, it is a time to give and receive. However, the spirit of the season is definitely in giving and being kind to others. That is something that Parton does best. She even says that she is addicted to the “feeling of giving.”

Dolly Parton has famously donated to multiple charities and recently helped out in the fight against COVID. She made a $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University to assist in vaccine research. That went towards developing the Moderna Vaccine. ‘Tis the season.
