Dolly Parton Wrote a Song for Johnny Carson About Her Rise to Fame Through His Show

by Thad Mitchell

Even at 75-years-old, country music icon Dolly Parton remains at the top of the music industry game.

Like every successful artist, Parton has had plenty of support and help along the way. One person Dolly is quick to mention when speaking on her success in former talk show king Johnny Carson. Parton is so thankful for Carson’s support that she once wrote a song all about how he has assisted her on the path to fame. The country star surprised Carson with the song as thank you for his uplifting support.

Dolly Parton played the song for Carson in a 1979 episode of his show.

Complimenting the singer’s dedicated and loyal fan base, Carson tells Parton he is impressed with her growing success. To his surprise, Parton returns the favor by pointing to his show as a reason for her sharp rise to fame.

“You have a great audience and I look forward, all the time to doing this show,” she says. “I’ve been excited for a month because people think you and me are great friends and I feel like we are.”

In the lyrics of the brief song written for Carson, Dolly Parton says she didn’t hit the big time until appearing on his show.

“Now everybody knows me no matter where I go,” she sings. “But I never really made it till the Johnny Carson Show.”

Visibly moved by Parton’s song, Carson offers a round of applause, a kiss on the cheek and a thank you.

Dolly Parton is one of the best-selling and most influential music artists of all time in any genre. She was put into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and is still heavily popular today. The “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” singer has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. She has 44 top 10 albums in her career and 25 of her songs have taken top billing on various country music charts.

Parton is also a well-noted songwriter who has composed more than 3,000 songs during her career. In addition to her work in the music industry, she is also a successful author, actress, businesswoman and humanitarian. The East Tennessee native even has her own theme park nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. With fun for the whole family, Dollywood is one of the most visited amusement parks in the country. The park opened its gates to the public for the 2021 season earlier this month.

Even with all of her success, Dolly Parton is quick to give credit to the one’s who made is possible.
