Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to be Focus of Upcoming Documentary, ‘The Library Dolly Built’

by Josh Lanier

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is about to hit a major milestone and to celebrate it’s announcing the release of a documentary about its history, mission, and charismatic leader.

The organization will soon have given away 150 million books to children around the globe. In honor of that, it will premiere the documentary The Library That Dolly Built. The film will stream Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. EST exclusively on Facebook.

In a trailer for the documentary, Dolly Parton calls the Imagination Libary “one of the most precious things” she’s done in her career. She also says she believes her success comes with a price.

“If you are lucky and fortunate enough to be in a position to help,” she says in the trailer,” you should help.”

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Began With Small Goals

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has become a global aid organization that gives free books to children from birth until they turn 5. Parton said she hopes it sparks their creativity and desire to learn. She’s given away more than 149 million books so far and has plans to give away millions more.

But she didn’t start with global intentions. The idea came to her across a kitchen table in 1995.

“It started from a place in my heart because my own dad couldn’t read and write, and I got him involved in it,” Parton said, in an episode of her Front Porch Series on Vimeo. “We were just hoping it would be something wonderful in our home county maybe a couple counties over.”

The program did leap from her native Sevier County, Tennessee, to others. Then to other states, and to other countries and then to other continents.

But Parton said it’s not fair for her to get as much credit for the program as she does.

‘I get a lot of credit fora lot of stuff I don’t even do,” she said. “I’m happy to be the spokesperson for so much of it. But without all the people involved in it” the programs wouldn’t be as successful as they have been.
