Eric Church must have one hell of a view from the top. He released his triple album Heart & Soul last month. Today, he scored his first chart-topper from that project with the single “Hell of a View.” This makes ten career number-ones for Chief.
Eric Church scored his first number-one single almost a decade ago with “Drink in My Hand,” from his 2011 album Chief. Since then, Church has been on a roll. In fact, each subsequent album has produced at least one number-one single.
“Hell of a View,” first hit the airwaves in November of 2020 as the second official single from his then-untitled project. Since then, it has been climbing the Billboard charts. Today, Eric Church as well as the single finally hit the top, thus gaining the recognition that they both deserve.

Eric Church co-penned, “Hell of a View,” with Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell. It was one of many songs written during their nearly month-long retreat last year. During that time, Church and a small army of writers and musicians, as well as producer Jay Joyce, wrote and recorded a new song nearly every day.
Eric Church told his label that they had a day of great weather. So, he went for a jog. When he came back, he could see Beathard looking out the window and could tell he was playing something. As soon as Church walked through the door, Casey told him, “Don’t say anything. You’ve got to hear this. This is really good.” Then, he proceeded to play the first couple of verses. It didn’t take long before Chief was hooked.
“I loved the way he had the line, ‘caught your wings on fire / when I smoked my Bronco tires out of that town;’ and I just thought it was such a great line.” Eric Church said at that point, he was smitten with the song. Beathard and Criswell, who had worked on the song earlier that day, sat down with Church to finish writing it. Then, they recorded it later that day.
Eric Church went on to say that he had a good feeling about the song. He knew there was something speacial about it when they recorded it. It sounded like a hit record. At the same time, Church said, it has a timeless quality to it.
He’s not wrong. “Hell of a View,” is a killer song. It’s about a couple chasing dreams. They’re not playing it safe and trying to find security and stability. They’re chasing happiness. Sometimes that means that you’re on the edge. It’s not the safest or most secure way to live. However, when it pays off, it does so in a big way. Real love, big risks, and reaping the big rewards from both will never go out of style.
