Folk and Country Music Livestreams, Concerts, and Releases: All You Need to Know

There is a whole world of bluegrass, folk, and country music just under the radar. Every now and then, the radio will pick up one of these incredibly talented artists for a moment. Before long, they go back to the same handful of artists and songs, though. That’s okay. Because these artists are out there releasing killer music and putting on live shows for their fans. So, whether you’re a fan of some of these folks or if you’re just looking for new music, you’re in luck. The coming months are full of exciting opportunities to get new music and share the live experience with artists you may not have heard of until now.

Bluegrass, Folk, and Country Live Stream Events

Let’s start with live-stream concerts. Several artists have taken to doing these socially-distanced shows since last summer. From metal bands to folk and country mainstays, everyone wants to play live. These online streams help everyone get their fix. It’s not the same but they’re still pretty nice.

Colter Wall and the Scary Prairie Boys

First off, is the Canadian cowboy crooner Colter Wall. You may have heard Colter’s mournful tune “Caroline” in the third season of “Yellowstone.” That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Wall’s music ranges from classic folk tunes to brooding alt-country. His more recent work sees him playing straight-up cowboy music. His voice and guitar work are both impeccable. Next month he and his band The Scary Prairie Boys will be putting on a live stream concert titled “Colter Wall and the Scary Prairie Boys: Live in Front of Nobody.”

The show is billed as “A behind the scenes look at Colter Wall with his band, The Scary Prairie Boys. Sitting down for a special live session in Nashville’s historic Sound Emporium, Colter and his band perform select favorites from his catalog, including some special covers and a few surprises.” The music starts at 8:30 pm Eastern Time on March 11th. Tickets and merch bundles are on sale now.

Don’t know who Colter Wall is? That’s alright. Here’s a video of him performing “Rocky Mountain Rangers” from his latest full-length album “Western Swing and Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs.”

Billy Strings

Billy Strings is one of the hottest guitar players out there today. Fans of folk, country, bluegrass, and jam bands love his progressive bluegrass style. The guy plays everything from old-time fiddle tunes to psychedelic stuff that would make The Grateful Dead jealous. No matter what style he’s playing his guitar work is blindingly fast. At the same time, his vocals sound like something from a golden bygone era.

Strings and company have two major events on the horizon. The first is The Déjà Vu Experiment. It’s a six-night event coming at you live from the legendary Capitol Theater. The concert series will not only showcase the group’s killer live show but will also celebrate the Grateful Dead’s residency at the theater 50 years ago. For full details on the spirit of the show, check out our previous coverage of the event.

The shows are February 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, and 24th. Each show will begin at 9 pm Eastern. The first and final nights of the series will be free to watch on the Relix channel on Twitch. The other nights only cost $19.99 through FANS. If you buy all four, you save a little money. The total cost for all four nights is $59.99.

Never heard any of Billy’s music? Well, you can check out his guitar work on Luke Combs’ “The Great Divide” or check out the video below of him and his band performing “Meet Me at the Creek” live.

Billy Strings and his band also have a few in-person live shows in March. However, all dates are currently sold out.

Live Folk and Country Concerts

It’s no secret that in-person live shows are hard to come by right now. Things are starting to happen slowly but surely. However, if you’re lucky enough to be within driving distance, you can catch some great folk and country shows in the coming weeks.

Vincent Neil Emerson – Pure Texas Country

There’s a good chance that you haven’t heard of Vincent Neil Emerson. Which is a crying shame. If you like old-school Texas country, you’re in for a treat. Emerson is a singer-songwriter with pure honky-tonk in his veins. His music sounds like a smoky bar on a Friday night. Personally, I can’t get enough of it. He has one live show in the coming weeks. He will be at the Mercury Lounge in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 6th. The show starts at 7 p.m. local time. Tickets are on sale now.

If you’ve never heard of Vincent Neil Emerson, allow me to introduce you to him with “25 and Wastin’ Time” from his debut LP “Fried Chicken and Evil Women.”

Charley Crockett

If you’re close enough to attend one of Charley Crockett’s upcoming shows, you probably already know about him. However, if you don’t you’re in for a treat. If I had to nail down Crockett’s sound, I would say it’s old school Bakersfield by way of Austin, Texas. Imagine if Merle Haggard was from Texas. It’s like that.

Charley Crockett is doing shows pretty regularly in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas for the next few months. Check out his tour page for more details. Don’t miss out if you can help it.

If you’ve never heard of Charley Crockett, here is the video for his most popular tune “Welcome to Hard Times.”

Upcoming and Recent Folk and Country Releases

If you don’t want to wait on a live show or just can’t make it, that’s okay. There is plenty of great folk and country music dropping in the coming weeks. Some of it is already available to buy or stream.

The Local Honeys

Are you looking for some serious female-fronted old-time flavored folk and country music? Then you need The Local Honeys in your life. This duo hails from the hills of Kentucky. Their Appalachian heritage is in full display in their music. They bridge the gap between old-time and modern music while keeping their roots firmly planted in the mountains. Their music is both beautiful and tragic. You have to hear it to believe it.

Recently, the duo signed to La Honda Records, the small independent label that houses both Colter Wall and Vincent Neil Emerson. On February 4th, the label put out The Local Honeys’ debut singles. “Dying to Make a Living” and “Octavia Triangle.” You can stream the songs or download them from their website.

Let me introduce you to his amazing duo with their coal miner’s anthem “Dying to Make a Living”

Tejon Street Corner Thieves

The Tejon Street Corner Thieves have been around for awhile. Their sound is a combination of folk, bluegrass, country, and blues. It’s just rough enough around the edges to have soul and just smooth enough to get stuck in your head. In short, these guys are incredible.

Recently, they announced pre-orders of their upcoming album. If you get in early, the albums come with some pretty sweet swag. If you’ve been missing out all this time, check out their latest bluegrass-tinged single “Deal Rag.”

This obviously isn’t an exhaustive list of what’s going on. There’s always something hiding in the shadows. It is, however, a great start. If nothing else, I hope you enjoyed hearing new music. Just like anything else, music is always better when you share it with everybody.
