As the first performer after Biden’s inaugural speech, Garth Brooks calmly belted “Amazing Grace.” The song tells a beautiful story about rising from the ashes of our lives with faith and perseverance.
And in a seemingly poetic moment, Brooks attempted a duet with the nation.
Before reciting the last line of the song, Brooks stopped and said “I’m going to ask you to sing this last verse with me. Not just the people here, but at home, and at work…as one, united.”
Some on the stage joined the country music star in song. Vice President Kamala Harris and superstar Lady Gaga were singing along, and yes, we were shouting the lyrics at home.
While some social media users noticed the relatively quiet audience and assumed a lack of participation, we blame masks hiding mouths and quieting voices. The moment was powerful, uniting the country as we open a new chapter. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.
