Garth Brooks sang “Amazing Grace” at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ swearing-in ceremony today. After finishing the song, Brooks took a moment to exchange handshakes and hugs with several recent presidents and first ladies.
Brooks announced that he would perform at the ceremony earlier this week. The announcement angered many of his more conservative fans. Garth Brooks stated, however, that this was not a political decision. Instead, it was a choice that he hoped would bring some unity and love to the country. Brooks joked that he would be the only Republican in attendance.

Garth Brooks showed the truth behind his talk of unity after finishing the performance. He shook hands with President Joe Biden, then went directly to former Vice President Mike Pence. After a quick handshake with Vice President Harris, Garth Brooks embraced both the Obamas and the Clintons.
Garth Brooks really lit up when he saw former President George W. Bush. Brooks ran to W and wrapped him in a big bear hug just like an old friend. Even in profile, the excitement at seeing Bush is evident on his face. After that bear hug, Brooks shared a quick embrace with former first lady Laura Bush before heading back into the Capitol and away from the crowd.
Garth Brooks’ Inauguration Performance
Garth Brooks was tight-lipped about what he would perform at Biden’s inauguration. He did say that it would be “Broken-down, bare-bones stuff.” His rendition of “Amazing Grace” was just that. The performance featured Brooks’ vocals and a single trumpet.
As Garth Brooks approached the podium where he would perform, a single Marine Corps officer stood. He lifted his trumpet and played the melody of “Amazing Grace” once. Then, Brooks performed a touching acapella version of the song.
The combination of the lone brass instrument and Brooks’ voice created a solemn environment. A silence fell over the gathered crowd. Garth gave a subdued performance. However, you can see the traces of a smile on his face the entire time. He is clearly happy to be a part of such a prestigious event.
Brooks sells out concerts all over the world. He has also performed for several Presidents of the United States. Today, however, he was surrounded by three ex-presidents and some of the most powerful people in the world.
Because of the pandemic and political climate, President Biden’s inauguration is historically unique. It is a day that will be looked back on for years to come. Garth Brooks can say that he stood in front of that crowd and did exactly what he planned to do. He showed love to all around and moved forward with a smile and a sense of togetherness.
