For his performance of “Amazing Grace” during the inauguration on Wednesday, Jan 20, Garth Brooks approached the microphone as a Marine played the familiar hymn on a trumpet.

The country legend paused to acknowledge dignitaries on the platform, removed his mask and cowboy hat, then began to sing. No doubt hearing a comforting voice sing a comforting song brought peace to so many during these turbulent times.

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me,” Brooks then sang unaccompanied just feet away from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. “I once was lost, but now I’m found; was blind, but now I see.”

His performance offered a moment of quiet reflection on an important day in the history of our country. On Wednesday evening, Garth Brooks offered his thanks to some of the people who helped make his performance a moving tribute to our nation.

“I want to thank Colonel Fettig of the @marineband,” Brooks posted on Twitter. “I also want to tell Matt, the trumpet player thank you for letting me stand beside you today. Our father, a Marine Corp Veteran of the Korean War, would want to tell you both “Semper Fi!”

Twitter Responds to Performance

Twitter users offered Garth Brooks much praise for his moving rendition of the familiar hymn on Wednesday.

“I have heard ‘Amazing Grace’ sung a billion times and this is the first time I had tears rolling down my face,” one user posted. “You sing that song beautifully. I was proud as a U.S Citizen and as an Army Veteran. You are awesome!”

“You did a wonderful concert today!!! Those who have given you grief about performing at the Inauguration aren’t your true fans,” another said. “The fans who know you know you are a true American no matter who the President is.”

“Music heals and unites but sometimes it’s the people behind the music who set the example,” one user posted. “Red & blue did not exist in the way you showed your love to each former and current President today. I think this country needed to see that. Thanks for just being you! Much love.”

“You were awesome today! My family and I sung along with you UNITED! Thank you for bringing your spirit and light to our television. More power to you, Mr. Brooks,” another said.

Garth Brooks Asks Nation to Sing ‘Amazing Grace’

As his performance of “Amazing Grace” drew to a close, Garth Brooks paused and asked everyone to sing along. It wasn’t just the few at the United States Capitol he wanted to sing along – it was the entire nation.

“I’m going to ask you to sing this last verse with me,” Brooks said. “Not just the people here, but at home, and at work…as one, united.”
