George Strait Celebrates Cinco de Mayo Issuing TikTok Challenge to Followers

by Jennifer Shea

Country legend George Strait is issuing a TikTok challenge to his fans in honor of Cinco de Mayo. The King of Country on Wednesday tweeted instructions for his new Codigo TikTok Challenge.

“In honor of Cinco De Mayo, we bring you the Código TikTok Challenge,” Strait posted. “To be a part of the challenge: Record a video on TikTok using the ‘Código’ TikTok sound. Put #Codigo in the caption. Post the video & tag GeorgeStrait. Follow @GeorgeStrait on TikTok.”

George Strait Is a Partner In Codigo

According to Rolling Stone, Strait is both a pitchman for and a partner in his favorite brand of tequila, Codigo. And the tequila brand has rolled out a special limited-edition tequila named after Strait, with extra Añejo: the George Strait Origen.

The country star has even released a song titled “Codigo.” Its lyrics go, in part: “I’m talkin’ ’bout Código / I take it with me everywhere I go / Best tequila, baby, don’t you know / A little sip and you’re ready to roll / They make it down in Mexico / A little state called Jalisco / Where the beautiful agaves grow / I’m talkin’ ’bout Código.”

Strait got the idea for the new limited-edition tequila brand when he was filming the music video for the song “Codigo,” which he wrote with his son Bubba and longtime collaborator Dean Dillon.

“I’d decided to make a music video for my song ‘Código’ and I wanted to do it down in Mexico at our distillery,” Strait told Cowboys & Indians earlier this year. “So, while we were there, we decided to do a little sampling. These particular barrel batches we sampled already had a rich, smooth taste for not yet having aged as long as we typically do for our extra añejo. So, we flagged them and let them age a little longer, knowing they’d be perfect when we were ready to bottle. They were.”

During the Pandemic, Codigo Lent a Hand to Bartenders

Last year, Codigo lent a hand to bartenders who were pushed out of work due to the pandemic. It donated 30% of the profits from every online order placed with participating retailers to the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild’s Bartender Emergency Assistance Program, per Wide Open Country.

“At Código, bartenders are an integral part of our extended tequila family,” company co-founder and CEO Ron Snyder said in a statement. “We couldn’t serve our customers without them. Now, with bars and restaurants closed across the country, we can all do our part to support our friends in the beverage service industry while doing our part to abide by safer-at-home guidelines, too.”

Of course, one doesn’t have to go to a bar to participate in the George Strait Codigo TikTok challenge. But now, with many states opening up and many drinkers toasting Cinco de Mayo, there should be plenty of material out there for Strait to pick the winners of his challenge.
