George Strait Posts Throwback Cowboy Shot to Celebrate Anniversary of ‘The Cowboy Rides Away’ Release

by Josh Lanier

George Strait is celebrating the anniversary of his hit song “The Cowboy Rides Away.” The song written by Sonny Throckmorton and Casey Kelly was released 36 years ago today.

The song about a cowboy and his woman who can’t work things out and must go their separate ways reached number 5 on the Billboard charts.

“This is where the cowboy rides away,” he posted on Instagram. “Celebrate today’s single anniversary for #TheCowboyRidesAway with this throwback from George Strait’s Team Roping in 2011.”

The song holds a special place in Strait’s career. The Cowboy Rides Away was the name of his final concert series in 2014. And Strait played it to close out his final show ever in front of a record-setting crowd of more than 104,000 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Jan. 14 Marks Another Big Anniversary for George Strait

Fifteen years ago today, George Strait tied the record for the most number one hit songs with his single, “She Let Herself Go.”

“She Let Herself Go,” marked Strait’s 40th career number-one hit song. That tied Conway Twitty, who set the record in 1986 with his 40th number one single, “Desperado Love.” However, the song was actually only Twitty’s 35th solo chart-topper. Five of his number one songs were duets with Loretta Lynn.

Strait would go on to amass 44 number one hits on Billboard over his 33-year career. Though, he still isn’t finished yet.

The 68-year-old recently announced his collaboration with TikTok. In celebration of the anniversary of his song, “Amarillo By Morning,” Strait is hosting the Amarillo By Morning TikTok Challenge. Fans can record a video on TikTok using the “Amarillo By Morning” sound and then tag Strait in the video. Strait will announce the winner on his TikTok page. Hopeful contestants must submit their videos by January 31.
