George Strait Sets Rare Tour Date for Lincoln, Nebraska Show

by Matthew Memrick

Country music star George Strait is coming to Nebraska’s capital city of Lincoln for a rare April 23 performance.

The retired “King of Country” is making a rare “Star City” stop. Strait plays about 50 concert dates a year after retiring from touring in 2014.

George Strait will play Pinnacle Bank Arena this time around, and it’s on a Saturday night, according to the North Platte Telegraph.

It’s been years since he came, stopping for a Nebraska State Fair concert at Bob Devaney Sports Center in the 1980s. Strait also visited the sports arena in April 1992.

“George Strait: Strait to the Star City” is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster. Special guest Asleep At The Wheel will open for Strait.

Strait Makes Rare Stop

Nebraska’s other large city, Omaha, last saw Strait in 2010. The star performed at the Qwest Center Omaha (now CHI Health Center) in 2010.

George Strait, who’s sold more than 70 million albums, played in Omaha on Jan. 14, 2014, for his “The Cowboy Rides Away” tour.

The singer has held a fantastic record of 60 No. 1 hits for a country artist since he started in 1976. He’s also the most awarded artist in Country Music Association history with 23 trophies.

Strait also ranks third behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley for his 33 platinum or multi-platinum albums (more than any other country artist).

Tour Magic For Strait Fans

The April 23 show comes before the new Austin, Texas, arena opens. There, George Strait will do two shows with fellow Texan Willie Nelson.

Strait told KFDI that he was “so glad I’ll get to ‘sing one with Willie’ and I can’t think of a better place to do it than Austin, Texas.”

Strait said he would also play with the Randy Rogers Band one night.

Las Vegas (February residency), Little Rock, Ark., and Houston in March will get the singer, too. Strait returns to Houston a few years removed from his record-breaking concert NRG Stadium show. According to the website Saving Country Music, he grossed $12.7 million for one of the highest-grossing concerts in history.

The website said the only artists ever to come close to this number were Houston-native Beyonce and husband Jay-Z, who grossed $11.1 million over two separate days in September of 2018.

In 2020, the website Ticket News said the country music star became just the 16th artist in history to reach a career concert attendance record of more than 10 million.

Earlier this month, George Strait was a featured performer at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, playing a hit-filled 29-song, two-hour set.

Lincoln’s been popular with music acts this year. The other shows are Eric Church (Jan. 7), Ghost and Volbeat (Feb. 4), Elton John (March 27), and New Kids on the Block (June 11).
