Grammy Awards 2021: Dolly Parton Receives Contemporary Christian Award for ‘There Was Jesus’ with Zach Williams

by Chris Haney

Previous to Sunday night’s 2021 Grammy Awards, country legend Dolly Parton already received an award for her collaboration on “There Was Jesus.”

During the non-televised portion of the Grammys, Christian rock artist Zach Williams and Parton’s single took top honors. Their duet won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song on Sunday afternoon.

For the first time in her illustrious career, Parton topped the charts in the Christian music category. “There Was Jesus” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart. Additionally, their single also topped the chart for Christian Adult Contemporary Songs. The two singers even performed the single live last year at the CMA Awards in November.

“Having a No. 1 record at any time is a great thing, but having a No. 1 faith-based record during these crazy times is even greater,” Parton said to Billboard. “I feel humbled and blessed to be part of this wonderful song with Zach Williams. It does my heart good to know that we have touched the lives of so many people.”

On Sunday afternoon, the “Jolene” singer shared similar feelings about the single following the Grammy Award announcement.

“Thank you Jesus, thank you @zachwilliams, and thank you to the GRAMMYs and all of our fans. I am very humbled but proud,” Dolly Parton wrote on Twitter.

Dolly Parton Responds To Grammy Nomination

With the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards just hours away, Dolly Parton may already know she’s won big. However, just a few months ago, Parton was simply proud to be part of the collaboration with Zach Williams.

The Grammys announced nominations in late November with the original event set for Sunday, Jan. 31. But a spike in COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles, where the event is being held, caused event officials to postpone the date.

On Nov. 24, the country singer shared the news of the nomination with her fans. She said she’s “proud” of the song and “happy” that it resonated with so many.

“I was honored to hear that “There Was Jesus” is nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song at this year’s #GRAMMYs❤️ So proud to be a part of this song with Zach Williams! I am so happy that it has touched the hearts of so many!” Parton wrote.

There will be no in-person attendance by anyone not involved with Grammy performances or awards this year. In fact, the musical artists themselves will be spaced out and socially distant throughout the event. Although Dolly isn’t expected to attend, she’s already made her mark on the annual awards show with one Grammy award to her name.
