With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Dolly Parton has graced the world with a must-try milk gravy recipe.
Southern Kitchen Comfort
In a 2020 interview for Marie Claire, Dolly Parton opened up about her breakfast go-to dishes, sharing, “Well, this morning I made breakfast for my husband and me[…] I made some sausage patties, and I baked some biscuits, and I made some milk gravy. He likes that once in a while. Now, I can’t eat like that all the time, but I enjoy eating it when I do.”
With what sounds like an irresistibly mouth-watering treat on the horizon, southern comfort lovers are bound to love this recipe. Keep reading to find out how you can make your own batch of Dolly’s famous gravy to put on the table this holiday season!
Down to the Nitty-Gravy Details
To begin with this recipe, the directions call for the cook to grab a small bowl to combine dry ingredients. The dry ingredients the chef will need are as follows:
⅓ cup all purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
¼-½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
After combining these, the next step instructs to gradually whisk in 2 ½ cups whole milk and ½ cup heavy whipping cream until smooth.
The recipe then calls to transfer the mixture to a saucepan and boil over medium heat. Stir for 2 minutes or until the mixture has reached the desired thickness. Serve over biscuits.
Parton Pens a Cholesterol Crowd Favorite
Still on the fence about committing to the gravy? Chef Art Smith tried the Dolly Parton recipe for TODAY and shared his thoughts on the final product, saying, “Parton’s milk gravy was a hit in my house and brought back some Southern breakfast memories for me… It was a nice blast from the past to be reunited with a breakfast treat from my youth. The simple, flavorful gravy was incredibly easy to make and will definitely make more appearances on my breakfast table in the future.”
Additionally, Youtube channel “QuarantineDad” shared a video in December 2020 of himself making and trying the recipe. When sharing his thoughts on the recipe in the final moments of his video, “QuarantineDad” points out the health benefits of the recipe in addition to its awesome flavor. QuarantineDad says, “I wanted to mention, this is great for people with high cholesterol, because there’s no grease in it. You guys know what I’m talking about down here in the south we put grease or butter in everything; not in this. Dolly might be onto something here, this is really healthy.”
