Jason Aldean Opens Up About Duet With Carrie Underwood on ‘If I Didn’t Love You’

by Josh Lanier

Jason Aldean told iHeartCountry that his new hit “If I Didn’t Love You” is a love song of sorts. But don’t call it a sappy.

The duet with Carrie Underwood debuted this week at the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country chart. Walker Hayes’ “Fancy Like” held on to the No. 1 spot for another week.

“(‘If I Didn’t Love You‘ is) a song about getting over a relationship and sort of knowing what you need to do in your head, but it’s really kind of hard to do that in the heart,” Jason Aldean said. “It’s one of those love song, breakup song kind of things.”

Aldean said he’s “usually not a guy into doing real sappy-type love songs — and I don’t think this duet is that either. It’s more of a kind of breaking up and getting over it kind of song. … To me that’s a kind of love song.”

Jason Aldean said he was wrapping up his next album when the song was brought to him. He loved the song and reached out to Underwood, hoping she’d say yes.

“We were pretty close to finishing up this album, but this song came in and we knew we had to record it,” Aldean said in a news release. “I went ahead and put my vocals down while we asked Carrie in the meantime. Luckily she loved the song and it was kind of like a rocket from there. She did her thing like only Carrie can…and I don’t know how, but she made it sound even better than what we expected. It’s a really special song to start this album.”

Jason Aldean to Get ‘Back In the Saddle’ with Tour

Jason Aldean will be back on the road after more than a year away from touring this weekend. The Back in the Saddle Tour begins Thursday, Aug. 5, in Virginia Beach, Va. HARDY and Lainey Wilson will open for the country music star throughout the tour.

You can see all of his tour stops on his website.

Fans that attend his shows will likely get an early listen to some of the new songs off his upcoming 10th studio album. Though he hasn’t given a release date or what the album will be called, he recently said it’s almost finished.

“We just finished tracking, and actually, I just finished vocals for the album,” Aldean said in a recent interview. “So, my part of it is done. We are mixing it right now and sort of getting things ready.”

Aldean added that the album will be “full of surprises.”

“We have some pretty cool stuff happening with this record. This is a big deal. So we wanted to do something that wasn’t just your typical, ya know, ‘Here’s 15 songs, thank you so much.’ We have some pretty cool stuff planned for this. A lot of songs and some special moments on there too.”
