Not all “Throwback Thursday” posts are created equally. A tweet from Josh Turner earlier today proves that. In that post, he recalls what lead up to his 2013 SiriusXM performance alongside the legendary Highwayman Kris Kristofferson.
Josh Turner Covers Kristofferson on “Country State of Mind”
Josh Turner released his latest album “Country State of Mind” earlier this year. The album is comprised solely of cover songs. A few of those covers, including one of Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen” include guest appearances from their original performers. This album was Travis’ first recording session since his stroke.
Kris Kristofferson appears on Turner’s cover of “Why Me”. This is the track that the pair recorded together for SiriusXM back in 2013.
As to why the “Your Man” singer decided to cover the artists he did on the album, he said that when he sings you hear bits and pieces of those artists. He says they taught him “how to be Josh Turner.” The fact that Turner can record tracks with some of his heroes speaks to his success as well as his respect for his influences.
The invitation took Turner by surprise. In fact, the Highwayman’s wife called him up and asked him if he could do it later that day. According to the tweet, he wasn’t dressed for the occasion but wouldn’t let that stop him.
I got a call from Kris Kristofferson’s wife Lisa asking if I could make a SiriusXM taping that same afternoon. I told her I wasn’t dressed for it AND if that wasn’t a problem I would be there. I wouldn’t have missed this: https://t.co/Y2i6r5uYXe.— Josh Turner (@joshturnermusic) December 3, 2020
Turner didn’t need to worry. He showed up at the SiriusXM studio in jeans and a t-shirt. In the video of the taping, he doesn’t look at all out of place. Even if he did appear underdressed, his smooth baritone voice would make most forget about his outfit.
Turner’s vocals mesh well with Kristofferson’s. While Kristofferson takes the bulk of the singing in this recording, Turner takes a lead role on the album version.
