No art happens in a vacuum. No matter how original an artist is, they have influences. So, it’s not surprising to know that many of today’s country stars turn to the greats for inspiration. However, sometimes you’ve just got to color outside the lines.

Every now and then a fiddle and steel guitar just won’t cut it and you have to dip into the other end of the musical spectrum. That is also true for the country artists that create the soundtracks to our lives. Justin Moore is no exception to this.

Justin Moore is country to the bone. Nobody can deny that. His music blends elements of neotraditional country and honky-tonk with a healthy side of southern rock. Now and then, he drops a track that sounds like it could have been at the top of the charts back in the 90s when country music was a little more country. That is because that’s what was on the radio when Moore was growing up. At 37 years old, Moore is just old enough to remember the heyday of 90s country.

However, that isn’t the only thing he listens to. Some of the artists on his playlist might surprise you. Justin Moore talked about his eclectic musical tastes during a round-robin Zoom interview with a handful of press outlets.

What Is Justin Moore Listening to?

Justin Moore’s parents loved the classics. So, he spent his formative years listening to the greats like Hank Sr. As he got older, he found 90s country on his radio dial. He draws inspiration from both of those eras. During the socially distanced press event, Moore said that most of his heavy rotation wouldn’t surprise anyone.

“All the old standby standards Hank, Waylon, Willie, Merle, all those guys. Dwight Yoakam is my favorite artist of all time so, I’ve got a lot of his stuff. Travis Tritt is a huge influence. Charlie Daniels, I could go on and on and bore you with that.” Justin Moore said about his heavy rotation. However, there are some things that catch people off guard.

For instance, Justin Moore is a huge Frank Sinatra fan. That might surprise some people. However, Sinatra has long been the favorite of great country singers. In fact, Willie Nelson and George Strait are both Sinatra fans. So, it’s a little out of the ordinary but not a huge bomb.

Justin Moore is also a fan of Norah Jones. That’s a little more surprising. However, she blends jazz, blues, folk, country, and soul. At the same time, her voice is undeniably amazing. So, it’s easy to see why she would be a favorite of just about anyone.

Justin Moore saved the most surprising for last, though. “I love me some Snoop Dogg when I’m in that mood,” he said. Like 90s country, Moore grew up during the peak of Snoop’s career. So, his early music stuck with him over the years.

It’s not just Snoop Dogg’s music that Justin Moore enjoys. He said, “I had an opportunity to be around him a couple of times. Honestly, it sounds ridiculous but he’s one of the most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. To get to hang out with him for a few hours was pretty cool.”

Justin Moore’s sixth studio album Straight Outta the Country drops next Friday 4/23. You can preorder your copy through his website right now.
