Kane Brown says there were times growing up where he went hungry. The recent American Music Awards winner opened up about his childhood and living in poverty. He said he understands what it’s like not to have a large Thanksgiving feast.

“There were times growing up when my family did not have enough to eat or a roof over our head, and today, there are so many people in need,” Brown said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” “(This) 2020 has been a hard year, but every small act of generosity helps,” he said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to bring awareness to the ways people can help during this holiday season and beyond.”

It was one of the reasons Brown decided to get involved with the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign this year. The program started all the way back in 1891. Currently, the organization provides relief and food to more than 4.5 million people during the holiday season. Additionally, the Salvation Army helps raise donations to buy children Christmas toys during the holiday season. In 2019 alone, the organization raised $126 million to support more than 23 million people

The annual fundraiser helps raise money to feed both the homeless and those that fall below the poverty line. It also helps provide shelter during cold winter months. The NFL partnered with the Salvation Army to raise money for its humanitarian efforts. The Dallas Cowboys has held a game almost every year since 1966.

Over the years, a variety of talented musicians have hosted the game’s halftime show. Sheryl Crow, Luke Bryan, LeAnn Rimes, and Kenny Chesney have performed in years past. Even Kelly Clarkson rocked the stadium in 2007 for the show. This year Brown will be performing as the halftime act for the first time.
