Keith Urban’s “Out of the Cage” has become a cross-over fan favorite.
Urban is no stranger to collaborating with artists outside the country genre. “Out of the Cage” features legendary funk master Nile Rodgers and country-trap artist Breland.
Breland revealed that the songwriting session took place at the somewhat random request of Keith Urban. Urban had wanted to work with him to see if they could come up with anything magical. This was one of the four tracks off of Urban’s latest record that was written during the lockdown.
“So, I said I’d be there tomorrow. I mean, working with Keith Urban? I was like, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Breland exclaimed.
“It’s 9:30 the next morning, my phone rings and it’s Breland,” Urban recalled. “He says, ‘Hey, Keith. It’s Breland. I’m in your front yard.’”
Rodgers came into the song after Breland and Urban created it.
“I get a phone call from Keith – and he’s my bro – so of course I jumped on the call,” Rodgers explained. He says, ‘Hey Nile, I got this song that I’m working on, can I send it to you?’ I listened for about 5 minutes.”
Urban claimed that Rodgers called him ten minutes later and told him,”Yo brother, this song is sick.” And the rest is history.
Breland, Keith Urban, and the music video crew quarantined for two weeks prior to shooting. The pair created a fast-paced performance montage in Sydney. Meanwhile, Rodgers filmed his part in Connecticut.
Keith Urban and ‘The Speed of Now Part 1’
“Out of the Cage” is not the only collaboration on his record. Urban also worked with Eric Church on “We Were” and Pink on “One Too Many.”
Part of Keith Urban’s The Speed of Sound Part 1 explores the idea of freedom. “I really wanted this to speak to liberation of all sorts, even if somebody in a dead-end job, somebody stuck in a relationship that’s going nowhere or someone who’s imprisoned in their own mind,” Urban shared of his record.
“It’s letting go of parameters, boundaries, expectations, limitations of any sort,” he added. Urban wanted to take an accurate photograph of who he is in his life right now both personally and musically.
The record marked an impressive streak of simultaneous number ones for Urban. The Speed of Sound Part 1 debuted at the top of the United States, Canada, and Australia country charts.
