Last week, Kevin Costner and his band reportedly performed at a sold-out crow at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to Forbes, the actor shared with the crowd the story of his father’s reaction when he said he wanted to be an actor. Costner then shared his father’s reaction to him wanting to be a director. “He said, ‘Kevin, this acting thing is going really good. I don’t know why you want to mess it up. So, when I decided I wanted to go back to music, I just didn’t tell him.”

Kevin Costner Reveals a Near Death Experience Led to Him Acting

During a 2015 interview with Tom Ferriss, Kevin Costner opened up about the near-death experience that led to him acting. While talking about his audition for Rumpelstilskin. “I just thought audition; I’d like to try that. I listened to the person drone on. But, what I knew at that moment, I was going to that audition the next day.”

Kevin Costner then revealed that while he was on his way to the audition, the accelerator in his Datsun pickup broke. “All of a sudden, I saw the brake lights up ahead and my speedometer is going from 60 to 70 to 80. And it’s not slowing down. And, I’m probably going to hit those people at about 90 miles per house and kill them. Kill myself.”

At the last minute, Kevin Costner managed to throw the clutch in. “There was never such a terrible whine but I thought, ‘Oh, my God, it did engage. But the engine was revving. I was able to turn the key off and coast to a stop. Pulled over into the emergency lane. And didn’t kill anybody.”

Although he didn’t make it to the audition, Kevin Costner said this was when he realized he had a passion for acting. That’s when he decided to start taking night classes at UCLA. “I took two classes in film financing, film budgeting. I showed up for the first day of class. I had already read the book. The entire book.”
