Kris Kristofferson opened up about what inspired him to write the song, “Why Me Lord,” during an old interview. A religious moment moved him to share his story.
The interview is from the DVD Ralf Emery’s Legends Vol. 2 but is available to view on YouTube. The video explains how Kris Kristofferson had an experience that he never had before while at church. The moment was so moving, he knew he must write a song about it.
“Connie took me to church the next day to Jimmy Snow’s church, and I had a profound religious experience during the session. Something that I had never had happen to me before and “Why Me” came out of it.”
“All the Sudden”
The now 84-year-old artist says that it was a typical church service. That is until Jimmy Snow posed a question to the attendance.
“Everybody was kneeling down, and Jimmy said something like, ‘If anybody’s lost, please raise your hand,’ and I was kneeling there, and I don’t go to church a lot, and the notion of raising my hand was out of the question,” he explains. Adding, “I thought, ‘I can’t imagine who is doing this,’ and all of a sudden, I felt my hand going up, and I was hoping nobody else was looking because everyone had their head over, bent over praying.”
Kris Kristofferson was in shock about his arm’s strange movement. But to an even bigger surprise, he found himself getting up to walk to the front of the church.
“And then he said, ‘If anybody is ready to accept Jesus…’ something like this, ‘come down to the front of the church.’ I thought that will never happen, and I found myself getting up and walking down with all these people and going down there, and I don’t really know what he said to me. He said something to me like, ‘Are you ready to accept Jesus Christ in your life or something’ and I said, ‘I don’t know.’
A Change Within Kris Kristofferson
With the help of a few words, Kris Kristofferson begins to feel a change within him. So much so that he said he beings to cry.
“I didn’t know what I was doing there. And he put me down and said, ‘Kneel down here,’ and I can’t even remember what he was saying, but whatever it was was such a release for me that I found myself weeping in public,” Kristofferson reflects. Adding, “I felt this forgiveness that I didn’t know I even needed.”
Kristofferson then begins to play his guitar and harmonica to “Why My Lord,” which is one of his 1999 releases. The song talks about a person who realizes their need for God’s love in their life, though they feel they do not deserve it.
