Before George Strait became the King of Country Music, he was recording this country ballad. A rare recording of the tune he laid down in 1976 has surfaced.

Take a listen to “I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This,” written and recorded by Strait in 1976 in Texas for indie label D Records.

Strait was also offered the opportunity to record another one of his originals, “That Don’t Change The Way I Feel About You” with the Houston record label. The Texan’s band at the time was named Ace In the Hole. Coincidentally, this title becomes one of Strait’s hit songs.

“I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This” is about the story of a man that feels like he’s being taken advantage of by his partner. However, he just can’t seem to walk away. The narrator in the song isn’t sure what’s going on between them and is confused.

“Can I see you tonight? / Baby, I’ll act just like you want me to / Or is that just exactly what I’m not supposed to do?” he sings.

However, he does know that he “just can’t go on dying like this.”

“I’m driving in my car alone / You called me on the telephone / How many times will it take till I’m convinced/ That you’re using me,” sings Strait. “I’m just a used-to-be/ It’s a lie, I know it’s a lie/ But I just can’t go on dying like this.”

George Strait Brings Back ‘I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This’

At the time, “I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This” didn’t receive much attention when it was first released. However, fast forward to Strait’s ninth album, Strait Out of the Box. The song that once showed off his young vocals was released with some of his greatest hits.

Not much has changed in this version. However, the King’s voice has noticeably matured. And the track has obviously been remastered.

Strait Out of the Box is the first box set by the legendary singer-songwriter. What’s more, it also includes three other singles from when Strait was with D Records. “(That Don’t Change) The Way I Feel About You” and “I Don’t Want to Talk It Over Anymore” are the two other tracks.

Strait re-recorded “I just Can’t Go on Dying Like This” for his 2013 album Love Is Everything.
