After auditions and tapings, American Idol is set for its first live episode of Season 19 will not feature Luke Bryan.

Unfortunately, the country music star announced on Twitter Monday morning that he will not be present. With a tweet, the 44-year-old shared the sad news that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

“I’m sad to say I won’t be a part of tonight’s first live @AmericanIdol show,” Bryan writes. “I tested positive for COVID but I’m doing well and look forward to being back at it soon.”

It’s a sincerely bad beat considering the buildup to this stage in the competition. However, American Idol and Luke Bryan fans can at least be relieved that Bryan says he is doing well.

While Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest hold down the fort, Bryan could miss another episode. Depending on how long his quarantine and recovery is, the country singer’s timetable to return is up in the air.

American Idol Announces Replacement

It didn’t take very long for the show’s official account to respond with what comes next. While Bryan recovers, an American Idol icon is returning: Paula Abdul.

Most everyone knows Abdul was one of the original judges. The iconic 1980s singer also hung around for eight seasons.

In a tweet, the show wished Luke Bryan well and also provided the news.

“Luke will be missed at our 1st #AmericanIdol LIVE show tonight,” the tweet reads. “But is resting in quarantine at home & we wish him a speedy recovery. We’re so excited to announce @PaulaAbdul will be stepping in as a guest judge with Lionel Richie & Katy Perry as we get closer to a new winner!
