Luke Bryan and Caroline Boyer celebrate 14 years of marriage today. They have five kids and seemingly a lot of fun together, but it didn’t always seem like theirs would be a storybook ending. In fact, their story starts with a devastating family tragedy.

Luke Bryan met Caroline Boyer both attended college at Georgia Southern University in the late 1990s. They met at a bar called Dingus McGee’s in Statesboro, Ga, Bryan told the Huffington Post. He said he needed a few stiff drinks to work up the nerve to even speak with her. But when he did, he knew he would fall in love with her.

“It took me eight seconds to figure it out—and it took her about eight years to figure it out,” he told The Boot. “I had to drink a lot before I could go talk to her, but I did. Somehow I managed to ease over there and somewhat be charming. It was one of those situations for me, it was like, ‘Who is that and how do I go talk to her? And, yep, I’m going to marry that girl.'”

But a funny thing happened on their way to the altar. They broke up after about a year and a half of dating. Bryan had big Nashville dreams, and Boyer had a degree to finish. So they each went their own way.

Though, years later, Bryan was performing at a bar in Statesboro and Boyer came to see him play. That chance meeting rekindled their friendship which grew into a love affair.

They married in December 2006 and have two boys.

Rewind to their first meeting at that bar. Bryan shouldn’t have been there. In fact, he probably would have preferred not being there at all. Because he was supposed to be in Nashville.

He and his brother Chris Bryan were set to move to the country music capital to chase their dreams of stardom. But, unfortunately, Chris was killed in a car crash a few weeks before they were going to move. Bryan, only 19, was left reeling, he told Robin Roberts. But he decided to stay in school and finish his degree before going to Nashville.

Then in 2007, shortly after he and Caroline were married, Bryan’s sister, Kelly, suddenly and unexpectedly died. Country Living said coroners never determined her cause of death.

“She was healthy, beautiful, and the best mom to ever walk this earth,” Caroline said of Kelly.

Then again, in 2014, Kelly’s husband Ben Lee Cheshire passed away, leaving Bryan’s two nieces and nephew orphaned. Bryan and Caroline took the teenagers into their home. Caroline said the decision was instant.

“We never thought twice about it,” Caroline Roberts. “You know, it was never something that he and I had to sit down and talk about. ‘Should we take this on?’ We just did that.”

Yet despite his losses, Bryan still sings about the good side of life.

“I’ve watched my family go through ebbs and flows where we get mad at God and we get mad at why this has happened,” Luke told Roberts. “Well, you keep going and you try to, try to be as positive as you can, and you try to appreciate every day … You’ll never get back to 100 percent. You’ll always be working to get back to 75 percent.”
