While he may be doing better than ever professionally, Luke Combs still has his struggles. The singer opened up about battling both anxiety and his obsessive-compulsive disorder diagnosis.
Comb offers a candid look into his personal life, pulling back the curtain on what it’s like being one of country music’s biggest new things. Combs has been battling his own brain for most of his life.
“It’s something that I always struggled with, and always affected me,” Combs said on The Big Interview with Dan Rathers. “The first time I can remember is probably middle school up to the end of college. And I still have my moments here and there.”
Luke Combs Has a Form of OCD
Doctors diagnosed Combs with Purely Obsessional OCD, which is a less severe form of the disorder. Symptoms of the disorder include intrusive and distracting thoughts that happen at random periods. One thing Combs has been worried about is his health.
“Essentially, my version of messing with the blinds. Or straightening the carpet are thoughts that I play over and over in my head,” Combs continued. “[For example,] it’ll be something about my health. I’ll be worried that I’m … about to have a heart attack, or a stroke. It becomes this very obsessive thing that I, you literally can never have an answer to.”
Over the years, Combs has come to terms with his struggles. He said that the anxiety associated with the disorder can be tough at times. But he’s also learned a lot about himself as well.
“You have to teach yourself to be comfortable with the fact that you will never get an answer. And that it is a super uncertain thing,” Combs said. “That’s what I particularly have struggled with. Sometimes that’s tough, but it’s something that you learn about yourself.”
Combs said he has a handle on his disorder and realizes some of the thoughts he has is symptoms of it.
“It’s something that I’ve learned about, and I’ve been able to get a hold of. So it’s been great to [feel] free from those things, for a long time now,” Combs said.
Besides, with a best selling album, a CMA Award, and recently married, Combs has a lot to be thankful for as well. The singer said he counted all of his blessings.
