Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd has announced he has COVID-19. In a Facebook video posted Sunday, the musician got serious when talking about how he contracted the virus and unknowingly spread it to people. He and his family are all in quarantine together.

“We are all on quarantine around here due to me coming down with the virus first. And I spread it to everybody else. And I had no clue I had it. That’s the scary thing about this virus,” he said. He also said he got the “Pfizer shots.” It’s unclear, however, how long it was after his second dose as it takes time to be fully effective.

He also noted how surprised he was that he contracted the virus, saying he had been careful.

“But that just goes to show how powerful this virus is,” he said. He also encouraged those who don’t believe in the virus to see him as “proof” that it truly does exist.

In spite of the bad news, he thankfully seemed to be in fairly good spirits, gently strumming a guitar as he spoke of his harrowing diagnosis. The caption for the video encouraged people to keep their heads up during this difficult time and to “stay safe.”

Johnny Van Zant is the current lead vocalist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is the brother of late Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant. He reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd ten years after they disbanded after a fatal 1977 plane crash took six lives.

Johnny Van Zant toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd up until recently. Though, there have been multiple band member rotations over the years. They performed at the Kabboo Texas festival on May 11th, 2019.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Vocalist Urges People to Stay Cautious

While the Pandemic is getting a bit better in many places, and the CDC has updated its guidelines, Van Zant reminded people to still be cautious and get tested if they’re showing any types of symptoms including a cough and a fever. He also urged people to wash their hands and wear a mask to continue fighting the spread.

“If we can save one person, it’s worth it,” He said, before ending the video with a goodbye.

From what it looks like, Johnny Van Zant is doing alright given the circumstances. In fact, there are moments where he smiles and jokes. Hopefully, he’ll make a full recovery soon, and that he and his family stay safe while quarantined.
