For some musicians, music runs in the family. That was definitely true for Merle Haggard. Merle Haggard had 4 sons, who are now all musicians. Haggard, who was a country music legend, was married five times. Four of his children picked up Haggard’s musical legacy, all forming different careers, and styles of their own.
Marty Haggard was born on June 18th, 1958. Before becoming a musician, Marty Haggard explored other creative avenues. As a teenager, he landed a recurring role on the CBS show The Fitzpatricks. He also had a role in a Henry Fonda film.
Marty didn’t just try and follow in the footsteps of his Merle Haggard. He forged a formidable career in country music. He charted on the Hot Country Country Songs list with five separate singles and earned a top male vocalist nomination from the ACMs in 1985.
Marty also performed with his father. Merle Haggard asked him to join his road band, The Strangers. On that band, he played rhythm guitar and did some backing vocals.
Ever since Merle Haggard passed away in 2016, Marty and his brothers have hit the road, performing and carrying on their father’s legacy.
Noel Haggard signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released his debut album, One Lifetime, in 1997. That album produced two singles which both reached number 75 on the billboard hot country charts. He also featured in the soundtrack of the film Maverick (1994).
He also toured with Merle Haggard and his other brothers in The Strangers.
Merle Haggard’s Youngest Son – Ben Haggard
The youngest of Merle Haggards, sons, Ben Haggard, has really carved out a name for himself. He was the lead guitarist for The Strangers for many years. On top of playing for The Strangers, Ben Haggard has formed his own career, releasing music and covering songs on youtube. Ben and Noel have done a lot of performing together.
According to Scott Haggard’s Facebook page, “his life and his career are tightly woven into the fabric of country music history and lore.”
Scott Haggard originally worked as a truck driver before pursuing music in 2006. He has since headlined with singers such as Mark Wills, Jeff Bates, and Charlie McCoy.
Merle Haggard carved out a massive legacy with his music and clearly inspired his loved ones to do the same. While each son sounds like Haggard in their own ways, they all have a unique sound that sets them apart. Now, they continue to perform in honor of their late father.
