Country music worlds collided when Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood performed the smash hit “Something Bad” in 2014. And Lambert was just as excited as any of her fans, perhaps more so.
The country music star was as giddy and nervous as a high schooler when she emailed Underwood about collaborating. While waiting for a response, all sorts of thoughts went through her head. For instance, she thought Underwood wouldn’t reply, that she might have changed her email.
“To me, this is such a big deal that Carrie and I are singing together,” she said, according to Song Facts. “It took me forever to write the email to ask her like I was writing to someone I had a crush on and you don’t want to mess it up.”
Fortunately for Lambert and fans everywhere, Underwood loved both the idea and the song. For the first time in their careers, the two artists joined forces to record a song together. The result was the perfect blend of their talents in an offering that wowed audiences in 2014 and continues to do so today.
Chris Destefano Wrote the Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood Track
Behind every great song is a songwriter. And songwriter Chris Destefano was relieved that not only Lambert but also Underwood was showcasing one of his songs.
“It was amazing to have ‘Good Girl’ do what it did with Carrie and have that whole experience,” Destefano told Roughstock. “But I’ve always hoped to one day get a Miranda cut. And to kinda have them both on one song is even more surreal.”
The genesis of the song can be traced back to far away from Nashville and the land of country music. Destefano wrote the song while on a retreat in France. He stayed in a castle with his friends Brett James and Priscilla Renea. They created the song while there.
“It was a lot of fun. And the whole track, the way I built it up, it was all organic,” Destefano said. “There was a huge room in the castle called the Sol d’en Aire. A really traditional looking castle room with a giant fireplace wood floors and about 20-25 foot high ceilings. And we’re doing stomps and claps. And I was recording this kind of groove and it had a fun energy about it.”
Upon release, the song was nominated for a Grammy award. The song was also the first duet by two female vocalists to top the country music charts in over two decades.
