As we grow, we develop special memories, especially while living in a small, tight-knit country community as Morgan Wallen was raised in. Which moments from his Tennessee home inspired his hit song “More Than My Hometown?”

During an interview on the Bobby Bones Show, Morgan explained the inspiration for his hit song “More Than My Hometown.” The song is a single off of his second album Dangerous: The Double Album.

“Me and Hardy wrote that together,” explains Wallen. “We both come from similar places. He’s from Mississippi. I’m from Tennessee, but they’re similar areas.

“Man, we’re real proud of where we came from, and I think we always will be,” he adds.

Wallen wrote the song with Michael Hardy, along with Ernest Keith Smith and Ryan Vojtesak. The same artists also co-wrote Morgan’s previous single, “This Bar.” Joey Moi produced the song.

Morgan Wallen hails from Sneedville, TN. His hit song depicts a small-town love between a couple who has been together for years. However, his love is looking for more and searching for dreams in the big city while he wants to remain in his hometown. The two split in different directions, although it is a bittersweet departure and a mournful goodbye.

I love you more than a California sunset / More than a beer when you ain’t 21 yet … I love you more than the feeling when a bass hits the hook / When the guy gets the girl at the end of the book“/ “But, baby, this might be the last time I get to lay you down / ‘Cause I can’t love you more than my hometown.”

So who is the girl, and how did his heart heal after saying goodbye to her as she departs their small town?

Perhaps, it’s not as literal as people believe. The music video definitely tells a distinct story of parting ways between two lovers as he remains in his hometown, and she heads to the bright lights of the big city. However, Morgan explains on the Bobby Bones’ Show how the song is more of a metaphor.

“This song also kind of means sticking true to yourself in a metaphorical way,” says Morgan. “No matter who comes and goes, I’ll be here being myself, and we felt like those two things coincide together.”

“To me, it represents not changing who you are for someone, even if you really love that person,” he adds. “I think it’s important to stay true to who you are. I was thinking of a comparison between the hometown that would be a good analogy. It has a few different meanings, but that’s the most important to me.”

The most important message Morgan Wallen draws from “More Than My Hometown” is “not changing who you are.”

“That song is that statement,” he explains. “Maybe that’s why it resonates with so many people.”
