National Tequila Day: Celebrate With the Country Stars Who Have Their Own Tequila Brands

by Katie Maloney

It’s National Tequila Day! And the day couldn’t come at a better time because we are ready for a weekend margarita…and/or some smooth tequila shots. So, in honor of this blessed day, we’ve compiled a list of a few of our favorite country music stars who have tequila brands of their own. Anyone in for a night of taste-testing?

George Strait

The king of country does more than just write and record iconic songs. George Strait is also a businessman. And his business of choice is tequila. Strait launched his tequila brand, Codigo 1530, with his friends and business partners after first connecting with them in Cabo San Lucas while on vacation. While the group was vacationing, they drank local tequila and Strait fell in love.

“I sort of fell into this tequila business. We all did,” said Strait during an interview. “We were not looking for a tequila, we just came across this great juice like it was destiny. My friend Fede [Federico Vaughan]…his family got this tequila from friends in Amatitán [and] we all fell in love with it so much, that after a few years of being stingy with it, [we] decided to try to share it with the world.”

Thomas Rhett

There’s something about the outdoors and tequila that just fit together. At least, that’s what country music star Thomas Rhett believes. He founded the tequila brand, Dos Primos with his cousin, Jeff Worn. Dos Primos is Spanish for “two cousins.” According to their website, the cousins “wanted to create a tequila that blended Mexican tradition with southern sensibility.”

“Being outside, hunting fishing, being with our family, camping, hiking, that’s just what me and Jeff embody,” said Rhett. “And I said to Jeff, ‘Why can’t this brand represent the things we love to do?'”

Rhett added that his “biggest goal is to make Dos Primos feel like home. I just want it to bring people together.”

Tanya Tucker

It’s well known that Tanya Tucker is a country music badass. But did you know that she also makes one of the “wildest” spirits in town? Tucker launched her tequila brand, Cosa Salvaje which means “wild thing” in Spanish, with founder Elle France.

“I used to be a wild thing, now I just drink a wild thing!” write Tucker on her website. “All my friends did a blind test with different tequilas and Cosa Salvaje was the hands-down winner, so I know everyone else is going to enjoy it as much as I do.”

The coolest part of the brand is that it’s ethically made. “What’s even more important to me is how the agave and distilling process is environmentally conscious,” wrote Tucker. “So we’re taking care of our planet too.”
