As far as love stories go, that of country legend George Strait and his wife Norma is pretty fantastic. The two have known each other almost their entire lives, yet she’s still Strait’s number one gal. In a truly sweet throwback photo with the love of his life, Strait shared a message letting all the fans know he was celebrating today.
The Instagram post shows a stunningly gorgeous couple – both smiling wide as they have their arms around each other. It appears they must have been attending a red carpet event or some other awards ceremony because they look breathtaking in their formalwear.
Many fans took to Instagram to show their love and congratulate the King of Country Music and his wife on their milestone anniversary.
While many would assume Strait has a charmed life – a beautiful loving wife, a storied country career and a loving family, his path to success wasn’t always picture perfect. He admits finding Norma was a huge blessing in his life and that she was “the first girl he ever loved.” The two grew up in the same Texas town and dated a bit before taking a break.
“We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town. I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a long time after that,” Strait says. “Then one day, I thought, ‘I’m missing the boat here,’ and we started dating again.”
Soon after, the couple decided to make it official and got married on December 4, 1971. When Strait joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii, Norma joined him. It was there that they started their family. The Straits were first blessed with a beautiful daughter Jennifer. Some years later, they also had George “Bubba” Strait Jr. By this time, George Strait’s career had taken off and he was making a name for himself in country music.
George Strait and Norma Support Each Other Through Tragedy
However, tragedy would strike the Strait family amid all the success. Jennifer perished in a car accident in 1986 at just 13 years old. It’s something the family remained resilient about, though they never discussed the death publicly other than to say they were grateful for the time they had with her.
Despite these setbacks, Norma continued to support George Strait as he climbed the ladder as a country music icon. She raised their son until he left for college as a stay-at-home parent. But then she joined her husband on the road. Forever supportive of each other, the two speak fondly about their enduring relationship.
“Norma and I are so blessed that we found each other … and were able to do all of this together, experience this life together, to support each other through everything, good times and bad. We do almost everything together … We love each other and we still like each other. A lot!”
