On This Day: Carrie Underwood Releases ‘Last Name’ in 2007

by Katie Maloney

Fourteen years ago Carrie Underwood released her hit song about drinking a little too much and making some poor decisions.

Many of us have had a night when we drank a little too much and maybe made some bad decisions. But Carrie Underwood takes that experience to the next level in her hit song, “Last Name.” During the song, Underwood sings about meeting a guy at a bar. Things escalate quickly and she leaves with bar with him before she even knows his last name. She drinks so much she ends up marrying the guy in Vegas. And when she wakes up, she’s not even sure what her last name is. She sings, “I don’t even know my last name. Oh, my momma would be so ashamed. It started off “Hey cutie, where you from?” And then it turned into “oh no! What have I done?” And I don’t even know my last name.”

“Last Name” spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and peaked in the number one spot. In 2008, at the 51st Grammy Awards, Carrie Underwood won her third consecutive Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song. Additionally, Carrie won a People’s Choice Award, and a BMI Award for “Last Name.”

“Last Name” Was Inspired By A Guy Carrie Underwood Met At A Post-Oscar Party

“Last Name” was the third single from Underwood’s second studio album, Carnival Ride. Carrie Underwood co-wrote the song with Hillary Lindsey and Luke Laird. During an interview, Laird talked about collaborating with Underwood on the song.

“My manager, Chris Oglesby, set up the co-write with Carrie, Hillary Lindsey, and myself. Hillary is one of my best friends, so we had written many songs together,” said Laird.

He added that Carrie Underwood shared a funny story about a guy she met at an Oscar after-party. And the three of them started writing a song about her experience.

“The three of us had already written one song that day. Then Carrie was telling us about meeting some guy at a post-Oscar party,” said Laird. “The guy got her number, but when he called her, she realized she didn’t even know his last name. He called her a couple of times, but she said it was past the point of her asking him his last name. Anyway, when Carrie told us that story, we all just ran with ‘last name’ and came up with a fun storyline. Very fun day! We laughed a lot,” Laird added.
