One of Carrie Underwood’s first singles and famous hits came out on this day in 2007.

Her song “Wasted” appeared on her debut album, “Some Hearts.” The song was written by Marv Green, Hillary Lindsey, and Troy Verges.

The song would become her fourth No. 1 hit and would also spend three weeks sitting comfortably at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

The song also won the award for Most Performed Song of the Year at the 2007 ASCAP Country Music Awards. Underwood released her debut album after winning “American Idol” in 2005.

Meaning Behind Carrie Underwood Song

The song tells an intense story of a man and a woman. However, their connection is up for interpretation. The song is really a clever way of thinking about the different uses of the word, “Wasted.”

“Another glass of whiskey but it still don’t kill the pain / So he stumbles to the sink and pours it down the drain / He said it’s time to be a man and stop living for yesterday / Gotta face it.”

As for the title, in an interview with The Boot, Marv Green said, “I liked the different meanings of wasted … like, obviously, drinking too much alcohol. But I also liked the idea of using wasted with time … wasting too much of your life. I like to look at words like that. I just thought it would make a striking title.”

The song started with the title and then, eventually, a few chords for the verse. After some jamming, Lindsey had come up with the very first line of the song. From there, lyrics started flowing into place.

This song, unlike some others, really started from the beginning to the end.

Up for Interpretation

As for this Carrie Underwood song, it is a little more complicated than just the story of two people. “There’s a story where these two people could be connected — the woman in the first verse and the guy in the second verse. But in my mind, it was open as to whether they knew each other or didn’t know each other. Maybe these two characters are completely separate, and they’re just tied together in a song,” Green said.

According to the songwriters, it’s all open to interpretation. Some connect the man and woman in the different verses, while others do not. It was initially intended to be two different storylines.

The song tells the story of what it means to be “Wasted” from the perspective of two different people.

Now, Carrie Underwood is looking to release a gospel album called “My Savior” sometime this year. She is also a part of the Grand Ole Opry’s 95th-anniversary show. It will be taking place on Feb. 14.
