Thirty-one years ago today, country music star Clint Black cleaned up at the Academy of Country Music Awards ceremony.

In 1989 Clint Black signed with RCA Nashville and released his debut album Killin’ Time. Most musicians struggle for a while and release a few albums before hitting it big. But not Clint Black. His debut album produced four straight number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The songs included “A Better Man,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Walkin’ Away,” and the title track, “Killin’ Time.”

The following year, in 1990, Clint Black won four trophies at the 25th annual ACM awards. The awards included Top Male Vocalist, New Male Vocalist, Album of the Year for Killin’ Time, and Single Record of the Year for “A Better Man.” George Strait, Tammy Wynette, Alabama, and The Judds hosted the show. And you don’t accept that many awards from that many country music legends without making a name for yourself in the industry. Needless to say, after that night, Clint Black was a country music icon.

Clint Black Hilariously Couldn’t Remember Who to Thank During His Speech

By the time he won Album of the Year, Clint Black was all speeched-out. During his acceptance speech he joked, “I told them I already had one.” He said, “I ran out of things to say.” Then he turned to his band behind him and asked, “Do any of you back here have anything to say?”

He talked about being nervous to be on stage and admitted that he couldn’t even remember who he wanted to thank.

“Thank you to so many people. I hope you know who you are because the names can’t come to mind right now,” said Black with a laugh.

Since his successful night at the ACMs, Black has landed 13 number one songs on the Hot Country Songs charts and 15 other singles within the Top 10 of the same chart. His longest-lasting number one hits are “Nobody’s Home” (from his debut album) and “Like the Rain.” Both songs held the number one spot for three weeks.

Clint is Also an Actor and Appeared in Adam Sandler’s Anger Management

In addition to being a singer, songwriter, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, Clint Black is also an actor. He made his big-screen debut in 1993 on the television show Wings. Since then, he’s appeared in several television shows and movies including King of the Hill, Maverick, and Anger Management. Most recently, Clint Black and his wife Lisa Hartman Black competed on The Masked Singer as the Snow Owls. They made show history by becoming the first duo to be unmasked. They were the seventh elimination of the season but not before performing an incredibly challenging song, “The Prayer,” by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.
