On This Day: Garth Brooks Proposed to Trisha Yearwood in 2005

by Matthew Wilson

On this day in 2005, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood confirmed their love for each other. The country singer got down on one knee and popped the question. Brooks and Yearwood have been one of the great love stories of country music.

Brooks and Yearwood met in the 1980s before either found fame in the industry. They were both demo singers. And when Brooks scored his first album, he asked Yearwood to sing on the project and also perform on tour with him. That kicked off a decades long friendship that would eventually turn romantic.

“[Songwriter] Kent Blazy introduced me to Ms. Yearwood, and he goes, ‘I knew you were going to like her,’” Brooks told Ellen DeGeneres. “When she left, he goes, ‘What did you think?’ I said, ‘Well, it’s strange. Because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife. But I’ve been married for 13 months.’”

Brooks decided to propose at the Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California. The establishment was celebrating country music with 10 bronze statues of the industry’s greats. Brooks himself was being honored. And he also decided to turn the statue unveiling into a wedding proposal. He got the sculpture to include a wedding ring on the statue’s left hand.

The proposal was a surprise to Yearwood. She ended up nervously saying yes in front of 7,000 people. And the two have been together ever since.

Prior to getting together, Brooks had been married to a woman named Sandy. Brooks and Sandy ended up divorcing in 2000. Meanwhile, Yearwood had two unsuccessful marriages with Chris Latham and later Robert Reynolds as well. Through this time, Yearwood and Brooks remained good friends.

Finally, in the early 2000s, Brooks and Yearwood finally started dating. And the rest was as they say, country music history. Brooks reflected on his love for Yearwood and all the things they have in common.

“This was somebody I always enjoyed being around, and we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did,” Brooks said. “If you like her and don’t know her, you’ll love her. If you love her and don’t know her, you’ll worship her. She’s the real deal.”

Recently, the couple also celebrated their 15th anniversary together.

“This is the second 15 years of our life,” Brooks said. “That’s the crazy thing. We met in ’87, ’88… got married in 2005. So, we went through the first phase as friends… and [then] the first 15 years as husband and wife. And I’m going to put all of my money that the third 15 years is going to be the best 15 years of my life,” Brooks said on his show Studio G.
