George Strait brings the love with this tender ballad for the ages. The country singer truly has something special with “You’re Something Special to Me.”
Strait recorded the song at the Sound Stage Studios on Music Circle South in Nashville on this day in 1985, according to Ben’s Country Music Show. Strait’s signature twang goes a long way to bringing the ballad to life. The singer serenades the great love in his life and offers a tune for couples everywhere on those romantic occasions. Sometimes, it can be hard to quantify love into a couple of sentences or less. But Strait gives it his best shot and certainly succeeds.
Lyrics include: “Every man has a dream/ And you made mine come true/ How it happened/ I don’t know or care/ I’m just happy I found you/ Wrapped in the arms of love.”
The song didn’t join his coveted 60 No. 1 hits. It only reached No. 4 on the charts. But it’s still plenty memorable and a good showcase of what Strait was capable of, even early in his career.
George Strait and a Love Story for the Ages
It’s probably easy for George Strait to write love ballads when he’s feeling the love himself. After all, every great artist needs an equally great muse. It’s easy to imagine Strait singing the tune for his wife Norma. The two met back when they were only small-town kids, and Strait realized he was in love.
“Norma was the first girl I ever loved. We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town,” Strait told CBS. “I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, ‘I’m missing the boat here,’ and we started dating again.”
In 1971, Strait and Norma eloped in Mexico, but they also exchanged vows in native Texas to appease their parents. A year later, the couple welcomed their first child Jenifer and later a son George Jr. in 1981. The couple has been married for around five decades now.
“We love each other and we still like each other,” Strait told People. “We’re so blessed that we were able to experience this life together, to support each other through everything, good times and bad.”
